Temperate Decidious Group A

Page history last edited by wikiuser0048 14 years, 10 months ago

                                                              General Information

Temperate Deciduous Forests can be found  in the east part of North America, they can also be found in southwest of Russia, a little in china and Australia. The weather in this biome is very comfortable, it is 5°(C) in January, it is constantly increasing through out the year, and the temperature comes back to 5°(C) in Decmeber. The highest it can reach is 25°C(usually during august). The average precipitation is 8.96(CM).

The average rainfall is 30 to 60 inches a year. There are four main seasons in Deciduous Forests such as Summer, Winter, Autumn, Spring. The Summer usually begins in June and ends on August. The temperature in summer reaches up to 70 degrees(F). The winter doesn't start until December. The temperature during winter is usually a little below freezing point. Rich Loamy Soil is a type of soil usually found in low lying areas. It  is very rich in Organic Matter(humus). These organic matter are converted to nutrients by fungus and other organisms. The rich nutrients and the aeration of the soil advances the retention of water.

                                                             Symbiosis

Plants and Animals in this biome depend on each other in many different ways. For Example, Ants and Plants are working together to profit each other such as: plants gives shelter and food to ants while ants stop animals from eating the plants. This is an example of Mutualism. Animals such as Opossums live inside the trees for shelter, on the other side trees don't benefit or loose anything. This is an example of Commensalism. Fungus grows on trees, trees gives them shelter but fungus absorbs all the trees nutrients, deteriorating the trees. This is an example of paratism.

                                                        Environmental Threats

Enivironmental Threats related to Deciduous is Deforestation and Indutrialization. Due to Deforestation, this biome is in serious threat. This biome is disappearing because they are being used for farming and for living. The trees are being chopped down for manufacturing paper and furniture, but it is also causing pollution. The plants and animals are becoming extinct because of food products and medicines. Industrialization is important but it is causing problems to this biome. These events are happening constantly in this modern world. If we continue this destruction, there won't be anything left of this biome.

The White Oak Tree's class is magnoliopsida-dictoyledons and its scientific name is Quercus alba. Its kingdom is Plantae, the Order is Fagales, the Family is fagaceae, its Genus is Quercus l, and the Species Quercus alba l. It can grow from 80-100 ft. tall. Its bark is a whitish gray and its leaves have 7 to 9 rounded points. The White Oak is about 3 to 4 feet in diameter, and the trunk spreads from 50 to 80 ft. Some adaptations that allow for success are that it is resistant to ice breakage, resistant to salt spray, and small salt-water submergence. In Spring, they produce small yellowish green flowers. Pollen fertilizes the female flowers, and then after a few weeks, they become acorns. It provides a lot of economical significance to the world. They provide hardwood lumber with a fine, almost watertight grain, which is excellent for barrel staves. They are also used for furniture. The White Oak Tree has no risk of ectiniction, so we will be seeing them for a long time to come.

The American Beech's class is magnoliophyta, and its scientific name is fagus grandifolia. The division is magnoliophyta, the kingdom is Plantae, the order is Fagales, the family is fagaceae, the genus is Fagus, and the species is Fagus grandifolia. It is around 90-100 ft tall and spreads 50-70 ft. Its bark is smooth and pale, and it has green leaves that are 3 inches. When they start to grow, they are usually wide, but then they get smaller as they keep growing. Some of its adaptations  are (i'll finish this part later). Beech flowers appear in late April or early May when the leaves are about 1/3 grown. The first nuts to fall are usually wormy or aborted (i'll add more later). It is mostly found in Eastern USA. It's economical significance helps us out a lo, because it's wood is used in inexpensive furniture. The American Beech also helps animals, because many animals eat the fruit that grows on this tree.

The Shagbark Hickory's class is magnoliopsida, and its scientific name is Carya ovata. Its division is magnoliophyta, the kingdom is Plantae, the order is Juglandales, the family is Juglandaceace, the genus is Carya Nota, and the species is Carya ovata. It is around 100ft tall, and spreads 25ft. It's upper branches face upright, and its lower branches droop. It's tall and straight, and it has an ashy gray colored bark. This tree is a prolific sprouter, and their pristillate flowers appear in March. Its native continent is North American. Its economic significance is very helpful to animals. Many wildlife species use this tree as a food source, and this tree is no where near becoming extinct.

Nikki, your plants need more info on them and to organize it to get the info easier. Akhil, your info is good but your graph is a bit hard to get info from.

On the food web I would start from the bottom and work up. Also you should add how many seasons are in the temperate deciduous forests.

Nikki, maybe you could add the approriate headings for the sections of information on your plants.
That would make it more organized.
